What is SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) value?

SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) value

People usually buy their mobile handsets by giving priority on their reasonable price, high-speed processor, more RAM, more internal memory, battery capacity and it’s backup time and bigger size of the screen. They never consider or don’t know about the radiation level or SAR value of smartphones and their impact on human health. This radiation of smartphones can be dangerous to the human body
due to long or continuous use of it. So, before or after buying a smartphone you should know the radiation level or SAR value of the smartphone of your choice.

What is SAR?

SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate. It is a measure of RF( Radio Frequency ) energy absorbed by per unit of mass of the human body exposed when there is a transmission of a signal between the mobile handset and mobile tower station. Simply, it is the electromagnetic power absorbed per unit mass of tissue.

Unit of SAR

SAR values are expressed in watts per kilogram (W/kg). It is measured over a sample of 1g or 10 g of tissue.

The standard limit of SAR value

In Europe, the SAR value limit is 2.0 W/kg specified by the European committee, the CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization).
In United States, the SAR value is below 1.6 W/kg specified by FCC (Federal Communications Commission), the govt. agency of the United States that regulates all communications across the United States.
In India, the SAR value is specified below 1.6 W/kg similar to that followed in the United States.

Why SAR value is important to the human body?

Electromagnetic radiations or energy emitted by mobile handsets are harmful to the human body due to continuous or excessive use of mobile phones. It radiates more energy when the mobile signal strength is weak. Radiation increases when the smartphone tries to setup a call.

How to protect the human body from the harmful radiation of the mobile handset?

Following steps will help you to reduce the impact of cellphone radiation on your body,-
Keep your mobile device away from your head or body.
Use a headset or phone speaker while calling.
Prefer texting than calling.
Better not to make calls while the mobile signal strength is weak and use text.
Go to a better signal coverage area like outside of your house to make if the mobile signal strength is less inside your house.
So, the SAR value is an important parameter of mobile devices that should be within the specified limit. Otherwise, it may be dangerous to your health. So, one should check the SAR value of a mobile handset that one is going to buy. After checking, if the SAR value is more than 1.6 W/kg (in case of United States, India) or 2.0 W/kg (in case of a European country) then you should change or your mobile handset immediately.
